How to Install a Webcam on Your Computer

As more and more plug and play webcam models become available, installing a web camera is easier than ever. Some webcams may require you to also install the camera software that came with it. Even so, the installation is still quick and easy for those with limited tech experience.

These steps relate to installing a webcam on your desktop computer with a Windows operating system. This article doesn't cover information for installing a built-in webcam on a laptop.

Check Your Webcam

If you just bought your webcam, check the information on the box or insert to verify that your webcam came with the necessary accessories. Kits usually include a USB cable, a device driver — on a CD or available for download — and a Bluetooth adapter if your webcam is wireless. Note that some webcams don't require special device drivers. If someone gave you the webcam without a necessasry driver, you should be able to download it from the manufacturer's website.

Connect the Device to Your Computer

Most computer peripherals connect via a USB port. Even Bluetooth capable devices connect to hardware using a Bluetooth adapter that plugs into a USB slot. Some desktops have USB ports in front of the system near the headphone and microphone jacks, but it's better to plug a webcam into the USB slots at the back of the system.

You may have both USB 3.0 and USB 2.0 slots on your computer. Webcams are often compatible with 2.0 slots, and USB 3.0 slots can usually function with 2.0 USB devices. However, it's possible a 2.0 webcam won't work in a 3.0 slot. Check your computer's USB ports and make sure the camera you purchase is compatible. If you have a compatibility issue, try using a PCI USB 2.0 card to connect your 2.0 devices.

Install the Webcam Driver

After connecting the webcam to your computer, a setup page should appear. If it doesn't, then it usually means your webcam is a plug-and-play type that is ready to use as soon as you plug it in. To confirm proper installation, launch an app that uses a camera, such as Skype, and test the webcam.

If you have to set up your webcam, the operating system will prompt you to insert the CD with the driver into the optical drive or direct you to the appropriate website for download. Follow the on-screen instructions, and then wait for the installation process to complete. If you don't have a necessary driver, go to the manufacturer's website beforehand and look for the driver, usually in sections labeled "Support" or "Downloads." Download the driver to your desktop and extract the files, if necessary. When your system asks you for the driver, direct it to the driver stored on your desktop.

Set Up Your Webcam

Use the software that came with your webcam to tweak settings for focus, image quality and even special effects. Depending on the type of webcam you have, you can either clip it to your monitor or set it on your desk. Adjust the camera to the angle you prefer.

Check Your Lighting and Background

Technically advanced webcams work well even in low lighting conditions. Cheaper webcams, on the other hand, may require you to add more light to an area to help it focus and register a decent image. This is especially important if you're using the webcam for work with a plain-colored background behind you when you face the camera.
